Boys Brigade - Boys Brigade (1983)

Boys Brigade was a Canadian New Wave band in the 1980s. Formed in 1980 in Toronto, the band consisted of vocalist and keyboardist Malcolm Burn, guitarist and vocalist Tony Lester, bass guitar Wayne Lorenz, drummer/bu vocals Billie Brock and percussionists/bu vocals David Porter and Jeff Packer. Booked by Raymond Perkins, Boys Brigade played an eclectic choice of venues to perform in Toronto. Bars that were not known for live music at the time. Among them, the now favoured Rex Hotel, and the Drake Hotel.

Part of the Queen Street West scene, the band's song "Mannequin" appeared on Q107's annual compilation album of local bands, Homegrown, in 1981. Howard Ungerleider, the lighting designer for Rush, signed a management agreement with the band that year, that was eventually signed over to Ray Danniels' SRO. Geddy Lee was enlisted to produce the band's self-titled debut album in 1983. Engineered by Nick Blagona (Rolling Stones), the sessions were stretched over six months, to accommodate Geddy's touring schedules.
The band's first single from that album, "The Passion of Love" was moderately successful. "Melody", the followup single was a Top 40 hit in Canada, and "bubbled under" on Billboard's US charts, peaking at #104. "Into the Flow" appeared on the soundtrack to the Canadian film Heavenly Bodies starring Cynthia Dale the following year.

However, internal tensions led the band to break up before releasing another album. Burn went on to a solo career, and is a Grammy Award winning record producer.

Go West - Go West (1985)

It was 1982 when Peter Cox and Richard Drummie first pulled their artistic talents together to form Go West. With only a publishing deal and a portastudio, but lacking a band or record company, Peter and Richard decided, with the help of their manager, John Glover, to find a producer, go into the studio and record two of their songs for themselves. These songs were 'We Close Our Eyes' and 'Call Me'. Within a matter of days John Glover was negotiating with Chrysalis Records and Go West signed their first record deal.
Their debut single 'We Close Our Eyes' was released in 1985 and reached number four in the UK charts, and became a top ten hit in the USA. The success of 'We Close Our Eyes' was followed by three other top ten hits; 'Call Me', 'Goodbye Girl' and 'Don't Look Down'.
Their debut self-titled album, Go West sold 1.5 million copies worldwide and established the pair not just as a chart force but as one of the great singer/songwriter duos to emerge in the 80s.
They became the focus of media attention, gracing magazine covers and making numerous TV appearances. In 1986 they won a BRIT Award for 'Best British Newcomer of 1985'.

Zee - Identity (1984)

Płyta Ricka Wrighta (Pink Floyd) w duecie z Dave'm Harrisem (Fashion), sygnowana nazwą ZEE. Album nagrano w studiu Rectory w Cambridge w Wielkiej Brytanii.

Identity is the only album by Zee, a short-lived partnership consisting of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright and Dave Harris of New Romantic outfit Fashion, released in 1984. Wright later stated that he felt Identity was an "experimental mistake" that should never have been released. The album was written and produced by Wright and Harris and all the lyrics were penned by Harris. The album makes heavy use of the Fairlight CMI, a musical synthesizer popularised in the 1980s. This creates a very electronic sound that persists through every track.

Yazoo - Live at the Royal Albert Hall (1982)

"One of the things I've learned over the last 25 years," announces Alison Moyet, "is that only once you've performed a song live do you really get the essence of what it is you've written."

For Moyet and Vince Clarke, the 18 month period spanning 1982 and 1983 in which Yazoo formed, released two albums and numerous hit singles, toured the world, and then finally imploded, is still a blur.

Those 18 months tell the story of two 21-year-olds accidentally finding themselves at the centre of a pop phenomenon, soundtracked by boundary-breaking music melding cutting edge electronica with songs which still celebrate the devastation of love at its most beautiful and destructive.

Strange Advance - Worlds Away & Back (1995)

Polecam jako uzupełnienie do płyty Over 60 Minutes With Strange Advance...

Strange Advance was a Canadian New Wave band formed in 1982 from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Their music was a fusion of progressive rock and new wave. The band's signature sound combined highly synthesized melody, driving rhythm, and space opera themes. Organized by producer Bruce Fairbairn (known for his work with Loverboy and Prism), Strange Advance was made up of Drew Arnott (keyboards, percussion, vocals) and Darryl Kromm (lead vocals, guitars), who met in Vancouver and founded the group in 1980. Paul Iverson would play bass in the band leading up to the second album.

Strange Advance released three albums between 1982 and 1988. The first, Worlds Away, featured the title track "Worlds Away", which saw modest airplay in North American markets in 1983. A dance mix of "Love Games" became a club hit in England. Their 1985 album 2WO brought their first big Canadian hit with "We Run". Arnott and Kromm added musicians Ric deGroot (keyboards), Ian Cameron (guitar, violin), Joey Alvero (bass) and David Quinton (drums) and supported the first two albums with a tour of Eastern Canada. Their third album The Distance Between produced the hit single "Love Becomes Electric".
In 1995, the compilation album Worlds Away & Back featured a mix of old and new material.

The Lover Speaks - The Lover Speaks (1986)

The Lover Speaks to duet New Wave w składzie: David Freeman oraz Joseph Hughes plus zaproszeni muzycy i wokalistki. Stylistycznie często porównywani do The Human League, zapamiętani zostali jako kompozytorzy przeboju No More I Love You's z płyty wydanej w 1986.

In 1985 David Freeman formed The Lover Speaks with ex-Flys bass player Joseph (Joe) Hughes. They recorded a demo tape which they sent off to Dave Stewart, who then sent it to Chryssie Hynde and finally to 80s super-producer Jimmy Iovine. The duo were signed to Dave Stewart's Anxious Music Publishing that year, and to A&M Records, Los Angeles in 1986.

With producer Jimmy Iovine they recorded the self-titled debut The Lover Speaks, which contains the original version of No more "I love you's". After touring with The Eurythmics they returned to Los Angeles to record the follow-up album, which was never to be released. The Lover Speaks split in 1988.
 more info

Like a classic automobile, they simply don't make albums like the Lover Speaks' self-titled debut from 1986 anymore. At first, the Lover Speaks may seem like a knock-off of the Human League. Singer David Freeman's baritone resembles Philip Oakey's deep croon, and whenever the backup vocals of June Miles Kingstone appear, the male/female harmonies of the Human League is instantly recalled. Musically and lyrically, however, the Lover Speaks easily separate themselves. The soaring, heartbreaking chorus of "No More 'I Love You''s" must've mesmerized Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics; she covered it in the early '90s. The original version by the Lover Speaks is a stunner -- stylishly crafted, soulful pop elevated by Freeman's booming voice. Like "No More 'I Love You''s," "Absent One," and "Love Is: 'I Gave You Everything'" surge with bruised emotions. But the pain in Freeman's voice is exhilarating, not depressing, to listen to; sad and bitter words pour beautifully from his mouth. "Every Lover's Sign" and "Never to Forget You" offer respite from all the melancholy confessions; however, it's the stinging ache in tracks such as "Face Me and Smile," a tale of infidelity, that linger after the album has finished spinning. In "No More 'I Love You''s" Freeman sings, "I used to have demons in my room at night/desire, despair, desire, so many monsters." All of his monsters are illustrated in The Lover Speaks, and every one is sharply rendered.

The Weathermen - The Black Album According To (1988)

A mysterious group around Brussels synth-freak Jean-Marc Lederman and the American Bruce Geduldig.

After his love for Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze in the seventies, Lederman moved to London in the eighties to drink beers with The The (Matt Johnston) and Fad Gadget (Frank Tovey). When he came back to Brussels some years later, he founded the group Kid Montana together with John Cale fan - Dudley Kludt.

Some time later, Lederman announces a new American group a la the Residents: The Weathermen. A few years later it was discovered that the group was in fact a duo of Jean-Marc Lederman and Bruce Geduldig. Bruce was part of Tuxedomoon, the influential American band of which some members (at least him and Blaine L. Reiniger) came to reside in Brussels during the eighties. Rumours were going that their group stayed in Brussels because criminals had stolen their equipment.

The music of The Weathermen can be categorized under the heading "industrial" (as does Oor's Pop Encyclopedia). After the Weathermen, Jean-Marc Lederman has continued in music, composing themes for games, and he currently also has a project with Julianne Regan (once singer with acoustic goth-band All About Eve). Bruce Geduldig has been acting and directing afterward, and has been doing a project with Luc van Lieshout (another former member of Tuxedomoon).

The Black Album is heavier, harder and crazier, a rock record played on synthesizers that produce dinkybop squiggles as well as more aggressively weird noises. In place of the first LP's monotonous grooves, the music here moves around a lot, while the vocals run from a quietly kinky socio-sexual conversation between "Barbie and Ken" to the melodramatic sci-fi nightmare of "Twisting Doorknob" to the ominous whisper of "Punishment Park." Lurid fun that never stops grinning, The Black Album offers solace to those looking for new thrills.

Videosex - Masters Collection (83-92)

Band Videosex was founded by Matjaz Kosi (keyboards), Janez Krizaj (bass), Iztok Turk (drums) and Anja Rupel (vocal) in the year of 1983. They had their first big gig at New Rock concert. By the end of 1983 they recorded their first single "Moja mama" and "Kako bih voleo da si tu". They were their own production.

In the beginning of 1984 they recorded their first album, named "Videosex 84" in "Top Ten" studio. They wrote all their lyrics, except for the song "Videosex", which was written by Kavric Balant. In songs "1001 noc" and "Neonska reklama" synth is played by Nina Sever. Shortly after that Matjaz Kosi leaves the band and Nina Sever takes his place. 1985. The second album is released, called "Lacrimae Christi". Special guests on album are Karolina Miha and Laza Ristovski.
In 1986 Nina Sever leaves the band and Goran Lisica takes her place. In 1987 they released mini LP "Svet je zopet mlad", recorded in studio "Tivoli" in Ljubljana in 1986. Guests on this album are: Dadi Kasnar, Andrija Pusic, Ales, Franci Puhar and Boris Romih.

Their last album "Ljubi in sovrazi" is released in 1992 and they did production and wrote all the lyrics themselves once again. Soon afterwards the group broke up and Anja Rupel continued a solo career.
